Toricxs HTML Help: Step 11 - Original Renaming (Cleaning)

In Step 11 your mp3 files are renamed and their new TAG is written (final cleaning).

Ok, now it is time to access the music files of your current collection. Your files will be renamed and copied/moved to their new location (like seen in step 10) and their ID3v1 and ID3v2.3 TAG will be written (data to write like seen in step 9).

To start the cleaning process press the ‘Rename now’-button (2)

But before set what is to be done if a file already exists in its new (not participated in the renaming process) form. Therefore mark one of the option buttons (1). Imagine you have a directory where all cleaned-up files are located in, and you didn’t add that directory in step 1 (because it is already cleaned up). There is a special file among the already cleaned-up files, let’s say ‘Eminem - Without Me.mp3’. You now did a LAN-Grabbing and got another file that Toricxs wants to put into the cleaned-up directory and is to be named  ‘Eminem - Without Me.mp3’, too. There are several possibilities what can be done now:

  • overwrite the already cleaned-up file. Select this option if you cleaned up downloaded files, to verify that potentially done changes to the TAG data are finally made to the files.
  • flush the new file. That means the new file does not overwrite the already cleaned-up one but is deleted when located in a move directory or left untouched when located in a copy directory. Use this option if you don’t want to overwrite files but also do not want to retain your old, sloppy files.
  • retaining both files. The cleaned-up mp3 is not overwritten and the new one is left untouched. So if a file already exists in its cleaned-up form then the new AND the existing files stay completely unchanged. That’s the best choice if copying files from a network machine (at the LAN-party).
  • you can be asked what is to be done for every (already existing) file. That’s annoying but useful if you want to have the total control.

To verify that the original renaming (cleaning) will work without problems Toricxs performs a lot of tests before cleaning. The following points are checked:

-Is there any file to rename or have all files of the added scan dirs been renamed in the current Toricxs session? If yes then you will get a corresponding message and the program aborts verifying and cleaning.

-Invalid chars in file- and directory names (that are not allowed by Windows) are replaced. Have a look at the following table to know what is replaced by what:

  • The length of the new file paths is checked. If a path is 260 chars long (limited by Windows) then Toricxs will abort and display a corresponding error message. It is possible that the original path would be longer than 260 chars but was truncated through the limitation (would result in a real mess in your new collection).
  • If a cd rom drive is added as move directory then it will be converted to a copy directory (through changing an internal flag). No visible consequences.
  • It is checked if you have write access to the output drive and -directory. A temporary file is created at the output location and then deleted again. If the creation fails then you’ll get an error message and the renaming cannot be begun. In this case make sure you don’t try to write to a network drive for which you don’t have a write permission.
  • It is checked if there’s enough space on the target drive. If not then you are warned, later you have the chance to transform any copy- into a move directory, which may save space if the source drive of the mp3s is equal to the target drive.
  • After all just described checks you are shown a window where all renaming options are listed and changeable. In this window you can furthermore transform copy- into move directories (and vice versa). Besides, there are options settable for the ID3v2.3 TAG handling. Click here to get help about this window (User Permission window).
  • When you have given the permission for renaming (cleaning) Toricxs will again check the move- or copy states, the write access and the drive space. If everything’s ok then you are asked if you really want to delete doubled files (if you’ve chosen this option in step 8 or in the permission window). When you apply then you will be asked a last time is you want to physically change your mp3 files and if you agree a last time then the original renaming process will be begun.
